“ad libs” is wearable art — comfortable and graceful clothing that makes a statement of originality and a creative lifestyle.

Webster defines ad lib: “to improvise (words, gestures, etc. not in the script)”. . . which perfectly describes my approach to graphic and clothing design. Since 1990, I have been writing the script as I've gone along, and it has indeed been an adventure! The energy source behind ad libs has been the exploration of color, form and design, with the freedom to constantly improvise, experiment and innovate. My designs are based on elements in nature and in myth — both stylized and abstract, and are influenced by sources ranging from primitive and medieval art to 20th century painting and sculpture.

Block-printing, which I have adopted because it best translates my graphic style, is the earliest known form of textile printing, thought to have originated in Egypt as early as the 4th century BC. My particular block-printing technique involves carving a mirror-image of a motif into a hardwood block — each color requiring a separate block. Color is then applied to the block, which is then pressed directly onto the fabric. The process allows for virtually endless variations in color and placement, and because I print each garment by hand, no two are identical.

This website is an overview of selected styles, colors and motifs, and I hope you'll find it fun and convenient to use. For additional information and updates, as well as show schedules, see our website or visit the ad libs booth at any of the scheduled shows to see the entire current season collection.
